Honorees

Internationally known as the “Queen of American Golf”, Glenna Collett Vare dominated golf in the 1920’s and 30’s.  A natural athlete, she became an accomplished swimmer and diver, as well as a fine baseball player.  At age 13 she was introduced to golf by her father and immediately fell in love with the game.  Six years later, after an unrelenting pursuit of golfing excellence, she won the first of her national championships and was on the way to becoming one of the greatest women golfers of all time.

Between 1922 and 1935, Vare won a record six United States Women’s Amateur Championships.  She achieved her first two victories in 1922 and 1925, and then won three championships in a row from 1928-1930.  Her sixth and last victory came in 1935.

Her attacking style of golf and competitive spirit, combined with her many victories, set higher standards for all women golfers.  Exciting to watch, she always gave her best, but was gracious in defeat, and she knew how to
win with style and dignity.
