Robert De Vicenzo
Robert De Vicenzo won his first golf tournament in Argentina in 1942, and since then he has competed prolifically all over the world. His victory total of more than 230 tournaments includes nine events on the PGA Tour and the national championships of 15 countries, a number of them more than once. He has represented Argentina 17 times in the World Cup, winning the team title once and the individual title twice. He has won many honors including the Bob Jones Award for distinguished sportsmanship, the Walter Hagen Award for contributions to world golf, and life membership in the PGA’s of Argentina, America and Great Britain.
In 1967, at the age of 44, De Vicenzo won the British Open at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club (Holylake), 19 years after his first attempt. He was the oldest golfer to win this, the oldest of all golf's championships, in one hundred years. He bravely held off a strong challenge from Jack Nicklaus to triumph by two strokes. The hugely popular victory was a glowing tribute to his determination and perseverance, as well as to his legendary skills as a shot-maker.
