Honorees
Arnold Palmer
More than any other individual, Arnold Palmer was responsible for the great golfing boom of the 1950’s and 1960’s. His heroic play, his magnetic personality, his amiability and warmth, produced a worldwide following unsurpassed in the game’s history and in the still vast membership of “Arnies Army.” Its members expected him to charge to victory every time he teed up and roared him on his way like no other golfer before or since, whatever the outcome.
Arnold Palmer won 92 times around the world, with 61 of those victories accomplished on the PGA Tour. He won the Masters four times, and the U.S. Open in 1960. His two British Open victories, in 1961 and 1962, are regarded as marking the renaissance of the world’s oldest golf championship. His peak years were 1960 to 1963, when he claimed 29 of his titles. He played for the United States Ryder Cup team six times, and captained it twice. He has received virtually every accolade and award in golf, including induction into the PGA and World Golf Halls of Fame.
